Reporting to the Director, Canadian Media Relations, the Manager is accountable for communications and public relations efforts for BMO Capital Markets, working closely with the Senior Manager, BMO Capital Markets. Activities include research, media relations, social media and account support/stakeholder management. In addition, support public relations efforts for BMO Financial Group, ensuring integration within the media relations team to support cross functional projects and take on work beyond Capital Markets.
Specifically, key accountabilities would include:

With oversight from the Senior Manager, maintain a positive news media profile for BMO CM products, capabilities, and spokespersons in markets within Canada, the U.S. and internationally, with a focus on the EMEA region. Emphasis is on developing and executing communications strategies that leverage the news cycle to reinforce the strength of BMO’s investment banking capabilities and industry expertise.

Supports timely and cost effective execution of comprehensive media relations plans that include planning around the use of social media to enhance CM media campaigns, while staying within the restrictions imposed by compliance.

Working with senior manager, develops and maintains relationships with a wide range of media contacts, including major national newspapers, regional print, online and broadcast media and business publications.

Day-to-day research, monitoring and analysis of external issues.
Knowledge and Skills
* Demonstrable understanding of how the capital markets work and impact the economy and key industries. Ability to understand how the capital markets fit into the news context of the day.
* A degree/diploma in journalism, communications or a related area, plus 5-7 years of directly related work experience is required.
* Strong writing and overall communication skills are a must and the person in this role must have a demonstrated record of implementing process-driven and metrics-driven media programs. An ability to work collaboratively is essential.
* Ability to network and to connect the needs of the lines of business with those of the business news media. Ability to think outside the box is a plus.
* Ability to multitask is indispensable, with immediate, short-term, medium-term and long-term deliverables always in progress. Ability to work on tight deadlines and excel in a fast-paced business environment is also necessary.
* Experience with primary social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
Accountabilities (List with approximate percentages)
* 75% A: Supporting the implementation of BMO Capital Markets PR programs designed to enhance the reputation, build profile for executives, and drive awareness for key initiatives.
* 20% A: Supporting the implementation of broader PR programs and initiatives designed to drive awareness for key products, services, programs and initiatives.
* 5% B: Campaign-based and ongoing media and social media monitoring and analysis, reporting and day-to-day stakeholder support.
Accountabilities (Description)
PR Plans/Campaigns: Assist in the development and implementation of strategic PR strategies that drive awareness of BMO Capital Markets across Investment and Corporate Banking as well as across key lines of business in Trading Products. Duties include development of messaging for annual campaigns like M&A League Tables and industry conferences.
Media/Influencer Outreach: Assist with proactive media outreach, locally and abroad to greater coverage of the company and positions BMO as an industry and thought leader. While the number of stories placed and impressions generated will be important, true success will be measured by the quality of stories and publications we appear in.
Authorities This role has the authority to implement all communication tactics once approved by the Director Media Relations and VP Media Relations and Group Communications.
Scope and Impact This role represents BMO and its employees to all news media and influencers and essentially plays a significant part in shaping public perception of the Bank.
Cross Functional Relationships This role works closely with marketing and product groups, divisional spokespeople and community relations. This role also works closely with other members of the entire public relations team.
