SAFETY TIPS FOLLOWING RECENT REPORTED SEXUAL ASSAULTS
In light of several recent reported sexual assault cases in Newmarket, York Regional Police would like to remind residents to keep personal safety in mind this long weekend.
Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section are actively investigating a number of sexual assault cases that have occurred in the past two months in the Newmarket area. Police presence has increased in the targeted areas and citizens can assist by keeping their personal safety in mind at all times.
York Regional Police reminds citizens to:
• Always stay alert and aware or what’s going on around you. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are
• Whenever possible, travel in pairs
• Travel in well-lit and populated areas, especially at night, do not take shortcuts through trails
• Carry a cell phone for emergency calls but avoid texting or using your phone while walking
• Avoid wearing headphones while running or walking
• Trust your intuition. If something tells you a person or situation isn’t right, it likely isn’t
• Report any suspicious vehicles and people to police. We will respond to these calls
• Call police immediately if you are a victim of a crime
